A Landmark Achievement for Cross-Border Cooperation in Prespa!
Today, the 4th Monitoring Committee of the Interreg VI-A IPA “Greece-North Macedonia 2021-2027” Programme approved a project of strategic importance: a new Border Crossing Point in the Prespa Lake area. This initiative will boost regional connectivity, collaboration, and sustainable development, fostering stronger ties between Greece and North Macedonia.
Key outputs of the project include a new police and customs facility in Greece and the renovation of existing facilities in North Macedonia. Hiking & cycling trails will link cultural and natural sites, promoting eco-tourism and accessibility
At its core, the project champions sustainable tourism, emphasizing regenerative practices that protect Prespa’s unique heritage . Strengthened ties between Prespes and Resen will foster cultural exchange and regional integration.
This project is expected to deliver substantial environmental, social, and economic benefits not only to the immediate border areas but also to surrounding regions, including Ohrid, Prespa, Kastoria, and Florina. Its impact will even extend to Albania through shared interests and cooperative initiatives.
💶 Investment: €7.7 million, with 80% funded by the EU.

The General Secretary of Regional Development Corporate Agreement (ESPA), Ms. Vasiliki Pantelopoulou, stated: “The approval by the 4th Joint Monitoring Committee of the project “Prespa Lake Area border guard station: Establishment of the border crossing point between Greece and Republic of North Macedonia at the Prespa Lake Area’ proves that cross-border Interreg programs are not just another funding tool but build ‘bridges’ between countries, societies, and cultures. This emblematic project of strategic importance significantly strengthens the social, political, and economic ties between Greece and North Macedonia. Through the INTERREG IPA Programme, we demonstrate that cooperation between the two countries can lead to tangible and meaningful outcomes for local communities, promoting prosperity and cohesion.”
In the same spirit, the Head of the Managing Authority for INTERREG 2021-2027, Ms. Maria Nezeriti, stated, “The development of the border crossing point at the Prespa Lake Area represents a key milestone for both Greece and North Macedonia. This transboundary region, rich in biodiversity and protected by international conventions, stands as a symbol of cooperation between nations. By revitalizing this historically significant border zone, we are setting a model for cross-border collaboration, strengthening local communities, and advancing environmental protection.”
